The Portuguese Coastal Route

Among the many options pilgrims have to reach Compostela is the Coastal Way, which passes through Oia.

The hospitality of the Monastery and the local people was well-known throughout history, which is why this itinerary is also known as the Monastic Way.

With 18 km of Atlantic coastline, the municipality of Oia is one of the essential stops on the Coastal Way. Two of the stages of this Jacobean itinerary pass through the municipality: specifically, A Guarda-Oia (16.5 km) and Oia-Baiona (17.8 km).

Monastery of Santa María de Oia

The Monastery of Santa María la Real de Oia is an ancient Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century, located in Oia, in the province of Pontevedra (Galicia, Spain).

Monks lived there for almost 700 years until they were forcibly expelled. The monastery’s church is currently the parish church for the inhabitants of Oia.

Currently, the Monastery of Oia is owned by «Residencial Monasterio de Oia, S.A.» and is awaiting the necessary permits to begin its renovation and transformation into a four-star hotel and thalassotherapy center.

Guided tours of its interior are available and can be booked through their website.

Oia's Magical Route

An itinerary that utilizes the service forest tracks crossing the western slope of the A Groba mountain range, creating a 15 km linear route that combines natural and historical heritage.

The route features several significant locations offering impressive views over the Atlantic coast, as well as groups of petroglyphs and remains of fortified enclosures, notably the Castro de A Cabeciña.

Folón Watermills

This short route offers visitors an appealing journey through the well-known Picón and Folón mills, now declared Assets of Cultural Interest.

These structures, located within this municipality of beautiful and fragrant name, sit on slopes that serve as a magnificent viewpoint over O Rosal.

The mills stand out for the imposing wonder of traditional engineering they display, as well as their seemingly fragile balance on the hillsides where they are found. Furthermore, their meticulously maintained surroundings allow for viewing a multitude of plant species, especially favored by the benevolence of the area’s microclimate.

In search of the ancient sounds of the «moas» (millstones) and «rodicios» (waterwheels), walkers can achieve, from the heights, magnificent views of unique beauty over Monte Santa Tegra and the Miño River

Celtic Hillforts of Mount Santa Tecla (A Guarda)

Mount Santa Tecla is located in the municipality of A Guarda, 12 km from Oia.

Its 341 meters of altitude are enough to offer spectacular landscape views. From the summit, you can observe the mouth of the Miño River, forming the border with Portugal, and the Atlantic Ocean.

During the ascent to the mount, you’ll see an archaeological site: the Castro de Santa Tecla. These are the remains of a Celtic settlement from the Castro culture. This society developed after the Bronze Age and lasted until the beginning of our era.

Baiona

Baiona is a beautiful coastal municipality north of Oia.

Here you’ll find the Fortress of Monte Real, a castle with incredible sea views. You can visit the replica of the Caravel Pinta, the first ship to arrive in Europe with news from America.

Enjoy its beaches and stroll through the charming Old Town. Also, don’t leave without trying the delicious local seafood.

Paragliding

Santa María de Oia is the quintessential area for coastal ridge soaring, offering beautiful views of the Galician coast.

The meeting point is at «Bar la Riña,» which is the first bar on the right when entering from Baiona.

Horseback riding trails

Just a few kilometers from the hotel, you can enjoy relaxing horseback rides.

You’ll get to experience the majestic natural routes hidden in the area’s hills. It’s an ideal outdoor activity to unwind and reconnect with nature.
